Philippine Airlines Douglas DC-6 PI-C295 'Cruz de Magallanes' Herpa 572545 Die-Cast Scale 1:200
Highly detailed Herpa Wings
1:200 scale.
Philippine Airlines acquired its first two DC-6s in 1948 and operated them on the Manila to San Francisco route. Because only three refueling stops were necessary instead of the previous four for the DC-4, it was able to reduce the flight duration from 41 to 30 hours. In 1952, Philippine Airlines received this DC-6B with the slightly stretched fuselage, christened "Magellan's Cross / Cruz de Magellanes", to strengthen its transpacific routes. This wooden cross, which still exists today, is believed to have been set by Spanish explorers led by Ferdinand Magellan upon arrival in Cebu, Philippines in 1521.
